This effective treatment may be indicated to correct crossbites, alleviate crowding, create room for proper tooth eruption, and reduce the likelihood of teeth becoming impacted. Expanders are often used before or alongside braces as part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan, though not every patient who needs expansion will require braces.
HOW DOES EXPANSION WORK?
Palatal expanders gradually widen the upper jaw to create additional space and improve bite alignment. In many cases, the expander is activated with a small daily turn for approximately 2–4 weeks to achieve the desired expansion. Once expansion is complete, the appliance remains in place for about three months while new bone forms and stabilizes the result—similar to how a cast supports a healing bone after a fracture.
At What Age Should a Child Get a Palatal Expander?
Palatal expanders can be used in both children and adults, though treatment approaches may differ depending on age and individual needs. Many children who benefit from expansion can begin treatment around ages 7-10, allowing orthodontists to address developing bite issues and create space for erupting teeth. However, not every patient requires expansion, and the right timing varies from person to person.
